Enabling OpenTelemetry export in Cloudera Data Warehouse

You can configure Cloudera Data Warehouse to automatically export workload telemetry, such as Hive metrics and Impala traces, to the control plane's OpenTelemetry (OTel) gateway.

Enabling this setting automatically routes telemetry for all Hive and Impala Virtual Warehouses to the control plane gateway, eliminating the need to manually set up individual OpenTelemetry exporters for each Virtual Warehouse. Once workload data reaches the Cloudera Control Plane's OpenTelemetry pipeline, you can route metrics and traces to external third-party monitoring tools or integrate them directly with Cloudera Observability.

Ensure the following prerequisites are met before enabling OpenTelemetry export:

  • Access to the Cloudera Data Warehouse console with administrative privileges.
  • Cloudera Data Warehouse version 1.5.5 SP4 or later must be installed in your environment.
  1. Log in to the Cloudera Data Warehouse web UI as an administrator.
  2. In the left navigation pane, under Admin Features, click Advanced Configurations.
  3. Select the Enable OpenTelemetry export check box.
  4. Click Update to save the changes.
  5. Rebuild all affected Hive and Impala Virtual Warehouses for the configuration to take effect:
    1. From the Cloudera Data Warehouse Overview page, click the Virtual Warehouses tab.
    2. Select the target Virtual Warehouse, click the Actions () menu, and select Rebuild.
