Helm 2 to Helm 3 migration on AWS environments for Cloudera Data Warehouse
Helm is a package manager for the Kubernetes platform. Cloudera Data Warehouse (CDW), which runs on Kubernetes, has migrated to Helm version 3 to take advantage of the improved security and upgrading capabilities. Existing environments that were activated on Helm 2 have limitations.
Using charts and recipes, Helm describes the structure of the Kubernetes applications that make up CDW. These charts and recipes organize the CDW applications on the Kubernetes cluster and enable CDW to manage the applications efficiently. AWS environments that were activated on Helm 2 have MIGRATE icon on their tile on the Overview page in the CDW UI. If you click the MIGRATE icon, you have the option to migrate the environment to Helm 3. Newly created AWS environments now use Helm 3 automatically.
AWS environments that are migrated to Helm 3
When you migrate an AWS environment to Helm 3, the Database Catalogs and Virtual Warehouses that use these environments have full functionality. They can be modified, deleted, upgraded, or manually stopped and started.
Limitations of AWS environments that were activated on Helm 2
Environments that were activated before the migration to Helm 3 use Helm 2. These environments continue to run. The Database Catalogs and Virtual Warehouses that use these environments also continue to run, but they use an earlier version of Cloudera Runtime. This is the version that was current when the environment was activated. Also Virtual Warehouse auto-scaling behavior continues as expected in response to the workloads run against it.
Disabled operations on Database Catalogs and Virtual Warehouses running on Helm 2 environments:
Performing the following operations on Database Catalogs and Virtual Warehouses that run on AWS environments that were activated on Helm 2 are disabled:
- Modifying, deleting, or upgrading is disabled.
- Manually starting and stopping the Database Catalogs or Virtual Warehouses is disabled.
- Creating new Database Catalogs or Virtual Warehouses that use the AWS environment on Helm 2 is disabled.
All of these operations remain disabled on the Database Catalogs and Virtual Warehouses that use AWS environments which have not been migrated to Helm 3. You can use them as long as you wish, but they are subject to these limitations.
