Renaming storage directories using Cloudera Manager

You can use Cloudera Manager to safely rename existing HDFS storage directories and update directory paths without risking data loss.

  1. Sign in to Cloudera Manager.
  2. In the left navigation menu, click Clusters.
  3. Click the HDFS cluster.
  4. Click Actions dropdown button and click Stop to stop the cluster.
  5. Go to the HDFS service.
  6. Click the Configuration tab.
  7. Select Scope > DataNode.
  8. Search for DataNode Data Directory property
  9. Remove the current directories and add new ones to the DataNode Data Directory property, ensuring a strict 1-to-1 mapping between the old and new directories (for example, if there were 5 directories originally, configure exactly 5 new directories).
  10. Enter a Reason for change, and then click Save Changes to commit the changes.
  11. At the operating system level on each DataNode host, rename the old directories to their corresponding new paths.
  12. Start the cluster.
