Validating and preparing FreeIPA upgrades

You can perform validation and preparation prior to starting the FreeIPA upgrade to verify that the upgrade will complete successfully without performing any changes or causing downtime.

As part of this validation and preparation process, in case of AWS, a temporary load balancer is provisioned on the cloud provider side to verify its permissions, metadata, and IP address details. Once validation completes, whether successful or unsuccessful, the temporary load balancer is automatically deleted. If validation succeeds, you can proceed with initiating the upgrade. The preparation step also copies the necessary images if required.

Cloudera Management Console steps

  1. Navigate to your Cloudera on cloud environment.
  2. Click FreeIPA > Upgrade on the environment’s page.
  3. Select the new OS version.
  4. Click Prepare and Validate.

A success message is shown if the validation and preparation is successful.

In case the validation and preparation failed, navigate to the Event History to review the cause of the failure. After fixing the issue, you can run the validation and preparation process again.

CDP CLI steps

You can use the following command to validate and prepare the FreeIPA upgrades with CDP CLI:
cdp environments prepare-freeipa-upgrade --environment [***ENVIRONMENT CRN***]

You can specify a target FreeIPA image using the --image-id option. Additionally, manage major operating system upgrades by passing the --allow-major-os-upgrade or --no-allow-major-os-upgrade flags.

The command returns the operation details, which can be queried using the cdp environments get-operation --operation-id [***OPERATION ID***] command. In case the validation and preparation failed, navigate to the Event History page in Cloudera Management Console to review the cause of the failure. After fixing the issue, you can run the validation and preparation process again.
